Today I headed down to Overpeck County Park after work to see if I could find a Vesper Sparrow Larry had reported. I dissected the overgrown fields he described in search. There were plenty of
Song Sparrows of various flavors and a good handful of
White-throated Sparrows. I could not find a single candidate for Vesper but a good handful of
American Tree Sparrows were FOYs. A surprise FOY came in the form of a single female
Common Yellowthroat.
A scan of the large goose flock yielded 250 or so Canadas but nothing else. I moved to a nearby field where I found my FOY Fox Sparrow and eighteen FOY Monk Parakeets roosting noisily in a roadside tree. My list continues to creep up as I continue my strategy of chasing rarer birds on the weekends and gradually adding common local species during the week.
